         About Me

Hi there! My name is Kristen Scherer, and I'm a game designer with a Bachelor of Arts in Game Design from DigiPen Institute of Technology. With a background in UI/UX Design, I believe that usability and game feel make a subtle yet big impact in what elevates a game from 'good' to 'great'.

While working as a game designer on "Potions: A Curious Tale," I had the opportunity to contribute to a variety of areas in the game and develop my skills in level design, puzzle design, and UI/UX design in particular. Collaborating with the creative team at Stumbling Cat was a wonderful experience where I got to bring fairy tale stories to life for my first shipped title. In addition to my work on "Potions," I also worked as a teaching assistant for Experience America, where I got to help teach secondary school-aged students the basics of game development in the Unity game engine.

I have been a UI/UX designer and a producer for several of my student projects, such as my last team project “Schemes,” as well as a solo developer for several projects, such as my mobile game “Winner Bakes All.” I have also served as the narrative designer and sole developer of my projects “Functional” and “Life is Ruff.”

I’ve always been absolutely fascinated by games! The first video game I remember playing was “Scooby-Doo! Classic Creep Capers” on the Game Boy Color. My friend was playing it on the car ride to school, and once she let me play it, I couldn't put it down! Games provided an escape for me when I was younger that transformed into an artistic immersion as I grew older.

The first game that made me want to become a game developer was “Final Fantasy X” for the PlayStation 2. I had never played such a narrative-focused game and became drawn to the escapism and immersion that narrative games provided me. Some of my favourite games are “Prey (2017),” "Bugsnax," and “BioShock” for their incredible ability to merge narrative and gameplay.

Since then, I have been drawn to all sorts of games, and I make sure to play a little of everything, even games I don’t like. I think there's valuable insight to be gained from every game, and understanding what makes each game tick, even if it's something I might approach differently, has been an important part of my growth as a designer. Ever since I’ve started studying game design, I’ve worked hard to learn from everything that comes my way, and I hope to share that with you!
