        Overview

My second game working as a member of OK Games. While we worked on The Last Dragon as a four member team, for Schemes we tripled our size to 12 members. I served as producer as well as UI/UX Designer.

        UI Design

My greatest inspiration for the UI of this game was Persona 5. A lot of research that went into the menus was studying the style of Persona 5 and the format of manga.

You can see a prototype of the menus in the videos below.

Pause Menu

The pause menu is the menu I am most proud of in the project. I’m trying to make it feel stylish and polished while also giving it less colour than the rest of the menus. I wanted to create a distinct difference between in-game and pausing, so I made it in black and white primarily while the rest of the menus as well as in-game are more colourful. The pause menu is full screen so that players cannot look at their opponent’s cards while the game is closed.

Main Menu

The main menu was very inspired by manga pages, and I used the original thought behind this main menu throughout the rest of the menus. To the left is the first iteration of the menu.

Since the characters of our game are a huge focal point and the player’s choice of character dictates the deck they will play, I thought it would be a good idea to see a rotating roster of them in the main menu.

Below is how it ended up looking in the game. The top is the menu with nothing selected, while on the bottom is the menu with “Start Game” selected. You can see more of the animations and other UX additions in the video at the top of the page.

Options Menu

Below are two versions of the options menus. The first in blue is the options menu in the main menu, while the one in black & white is the options menu in the pause menu. Both versions are created with the slanting theme throughout the rest of the menus, and the sliders and check boxes are coloured according to the character colours more easily seen in the character select menu.

Character Select

The art director of OK Games, Delaney Kohler, created the concept art for the character select menu to the right.

I based the character select screen in the game heavily off of this. The concept art was so stylised and in theme that I used it as the basis for the art and animations of all of the menus. To the left is the original concept art.
